I just aquired a 28 hp rude 1963. I also have a 1956 30 hp johnnie. My question is how many of the parts will interchange off the 28 to the 30? Flywheel, gears in lu, some of the hard to find parts. I just want to keep the 30 since thats the mtr I use. The 28 was given to me and I've already saved 80 dollars because the props are the same and I was about to purchase a spare.
Thanks

You'll find a lot is the same. Both these engines use a 35.7CID block so you'll find a lot of the internals are also the same (ie, pistons, crank etc.), but I belive the 30hp has a plain bearing on it's rod's little end, where I'm certain the 28hp has needle bearings there.
I belive the lower units are both identical. If there's a ring gear on your 28hp flywheel, you cannot take it off since the balancing holes are drilled in it.
They're basically identical engines. Run whichever one has better compression/is in better condition.
I hope this helps!

Paul, I think I will try and run this motor, and if it sounds ok then replace impeller
and lake test it. Something that puzzles me is all the specs in my manuel are the same between the 30 and 28. Why the difference of 2 hp?

Marketing mabey?
30hp was the largest engine in '56. In '63 there was the 40hp above it. Mabey they didn't want the 30 competing with the 40hp. Or mabey they didn't want people to think it was a 7 year old design.
The 33hp ('65-) has the same displacement as the '50s 35hp too.
