That is it for now. Approx. how much gear oil should be in Lower Unit? I got in about 12oz. Thanks a lot.

Welcome to Iboats, Sparkadict!
Electric shift - 15.0oz
Manual shift - 13.9oz
With the engine in the upright position (normal) you fill from the bottom screw hole until it flows out the top. Then insert the top plug annd remove the bottle from the bottom. Careful not to ever remove the phillips head screw on the bottom if you have a manual shift 40hp. Good luck!

Thanks for that info. I was hoping that I was in the neighborhood with "around 12oz." Ya, I believe I took that screw out about 5 years ago when I first got the boat. I filled from the top is that a problem? Isn't it an air issue? How serious is it?

No problem - it's just a lot more work burping all the air out when you fill from the top. The idea is to fill the gearcase up to the 'vent' screw hole line when the engine is in it's normal position. How you do it isn't really very important. You can get these nifty pumps from Walmart and other places that fit on to an oil bottle, and you pump the oil in through the bottom 'till it runs out the top. They really take the work out of a lower unit oil change.

Paul Moir is right about the pump. I never used one before this year when I bought one and I don't know how I ever lived with out it. They are pretty cheap too, I got the pump and a quart of lower unit fluid for $10.00. Another little trick is if you need to top it off at the top is to use a oil can that has one of those pumping handles, the kind you put all purpose oil in to dispence.
