HAs 96 lbs compression per side. Bright blue snappy spark, but will not fire up. Carburation aside, wont even fire with fuel in the plug holes. Had it running but discovered the needle tip broken in the carb. Had to drill it out. I know it will run poorly maybe until i can get another carb, but what on earth would stop it from at least firing with fuel in the hole?

"Outboard won't start" is detailed in the Top Secret file, woody.

Good luck, and tell us what you find. :)

Thanks JB. That doc. has helped me in the past. I have learned enough here and hands on to check all that out. Here, the flywheel key is not sheared, have bright spark, and good compression. It's really got me scratching my head..

If you have compression, and spark that will jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue spark (ck spark w/plugs removed, 1/4" gap is important), and the flywheel key isn't sheared, it has to fire.

Are you sure that's fuel you're shooting into the cylinder?

yup.. Fresh pre-mix right in both holes. And the spark is good..Compression also. I just got it to sputter for 10 seconds, and now nothing again. took the flywheel off again to inspect key, and that's fine as well.

I'd say you have something causing intermittent spark. As Joe said, it's GOT to fire. Check for wire chaffing shorting out the spark, etc.
Nice compression #'s, BTW!

A thought...... if you have the exact same compression reading on both cylinders, suspect a failing head gasket at some point between the cylinders. This would allow compression to travel back and forth between the cylinders which obviously inteferes with the firing procedure.

96 psi for a 5.5hp? Rather unusual.

im suspecting carburation at this point..The low speed needle tip was broken off in the hole. I had to remove the metal ipressed cap there and drill thru the body to punch it out. sealed it back up with a lead splitshot. It enlarged the hole a bit. I did just now get it to run for 15 seconds with an obvious fuel issue. I have a 1957 7.5 carb that looks like it would fit right on there, but i need to get it cleaned up first. ..a least the top is the same.. The bottom has the bowl on it, and the 63 has the glass bowl on the side of the motor. Guess ill try the swap..

Thanks for the help guys..It was carb. issues because i had to drill the needle out causing an over rich condition. The top half of the 7.5 carb worksd after i removed some parts from the 63 carb. If anyone has a spare 63 carb top half laying around, i could use it. No idea why it wouldn't catch with fuel in the plug holes, but.. Running issue solved. Now.. To getting the impeller done with rusty bolts to remove.. I believe that one needs to have the head removed...
