What do you mean cleaned the carb a bit, did you disassemble it completely and clean all the passages including the ones under the core plug on top of the carb?
Got the needle valves set correctly?
Float set properly, needle/seat clean?

Re: 63' johnson tries to start and run...help!!!!!

Thanks for the reply. It ran before so I did not dive in and clean the entire carb. Just cleaned the bowl out. Its acting like its flooding out. I can prime it then attempt to start it. When and if it starts up it starts killing over within a few seconds. I'm thinking there is some junk in the carb. When I was looking at the float I noticed the little needle jet that rides on the float arm did not move. Is that litle silver needle jet supposed to have ome spring to it?
I had the needle jet on the front on the carb adjusted 1/4 from closed like the manuel insisted.

Re: 63' johnson tries to start and run...help!!!!!

Just figured out an issue from a previous thread. My solenoid terminal broke off. So I grabbed one from the auto store (an old ford style). If what the post said was true the ford solenoid has two hot post. This being said I am possibly tripping my safety switch. Is this true?

Auto solenoid will not work for marine application. Get the correct solenoid. Hope you didn't fry your safety switch.

Re: 63' johnson tries to start and run...help!!!!!

Ok I put the proper solenoid on and a carb rebuild kit. SHE IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!! Now i think I have a fuel pump prob. I tried to accelerate the throttle a bit and she tries to die. Looked at the glass bowl and it is about a quarter full. Think my fuel pump is going out. I dunno, please give some advice....

Pump the fuel line bulb when it starts to die, and if that restores it to good running condition, then you probably have a fuel pump problem. The sediment bowl never stays completely full.

Re: 63' johnson tries to start and run...help!!!!!

I swapped carbs and now she is running. I did'nt care much for that automatic choke carb. The one I put on is manuel choke. She fired right up. I guess something went wrong w the rebuild kit i placed in the original carb. Might have been adjusted wrong. I did notice a small hole in the fuel pump diaphram, so I will replace that as well. Thanks for the advice guys.
