so i have run into a few problems with this little motro but i think its cool so my 9 year old nephew have been working on it together for fun as we cant afford a vacation.

i am going to change the carb kit, i cleaned all the needles and such will a new kit make a difference compared to just cleaning it.

second what the proper way to start this engine. i see instructions say open vent turn on gas valve set magnito to start pull choke.

i notice the low speed needle has a half wing does this serve any function when starting. thank you

Once the low speed needle has been correctly set you should not normally need to change the setting.

See the link in Tashasdaddys "Top Secret File" to Joe Reeves' instructions for setting carb needles.

Otherwise start as you say

Fuel on, vent open, pull choke, set throttle to start position.
(May want to experiment with throttle opening to find the best setting.)
Pull string.

The carb kit should contain all the parts you are likely to need but you may not need them all.

Do get the carb rebuild kit...and thoroughly dissassemble and clean, blow out the passages in the carb, $20.00 well spent, I just picked one of these up myself, repaired it then sold it, fun project!! Check compression, spark,
and be sure you have clean fuel. Make sure the air cleaner( tube) is connected as it won't run without it. Have fun....

Re: 64 3hp johnson

You should have a long tube looking object that attatches to the front of the carb then turns toward the rear of the motor with its opening facing the rear of motor. It is under the cover on the right side facing the motor. May appear to look like a little muffler but is an air snorkel, without it attatched to much air enters the carb and motor will fire but not stay running.

Re: 64 3hp johnson

That spring probably attaches the needle valve to the float. Some motors did not originally come with them, but it is a good idea to put it on.

I think goes the other way around. One end loops around the needle, the other slips into to float.

Here is a picture / diagram that may help a little. Float, spring pin and needle.

The small end clips on the needle, but the larger clip side sides on the side of the flange of the float. When the carburetor bowl fills it push the float up and stops more fuel from getting in by pushing the needle up and just the opposition happens when the bowl starts to empty.

If I have that wrong someone please correct me.

We all have learned from others, so don't apologize. You never know, you might just scrape our butt off the floor when we need help.:)

Be sure to replace the packing in the low speed needle, they are the small fiber orings in the kit. Also note that these rebuild kits fit a variety of small engine carbs so there may well be some leftover parts that do not fit your particular model. have fun let us know how things go.....

Re: 64 3hp johnson

It will run for decades more......
By the way, even though that is a 1964 motor and is advertised as a 50:1 gas oil ratio model, it does not have a full set of jeweled bearings and would appreciate some extra oil, maybe 40:1. It will actually run fine down to 20:1.
