Re: 64 Edinboro custom learn somthing new every day

I think mine were dealer added. Don't have alot of pics from back then, but theuy came with the boat. 2 trumpets, scares the hell out of bigger boats...They keep loking around for the big boat...

How come the new wheel Jon?

That's funny having a big sound from a smaller boat ..... I love the sound and the looks of the chrome horns. I have a set from a semi truck that someone gave me but I can't get them to work. They are huge and look funny on my little boat so I am not going to use them.

I changed my steering to a rotary system 'cause I don't want to have to mess with those old cables and pulleys and it came with a new wheel.

Re: 64 Edinboro custom learn somthing new every day

I finally tested my new T-horn it was pretty loud but I think nothing like an air horn. My trip to ST-Aug was fun but the Sailors Exchange store was closed until the 3rd . Looking in the windows of the place they had all kinds cool stuff like some chrome deck mounted spot lights. Its only about 30 minutes down A1A from where I.m working in jax beach so maybe go check out when I get off soon. It got down to freezing temps last night and stayed in 50.s all day Brrrrrrrr I hate cold weather! Think I may temp close in my work area this week.
Here's a pic of my old steering system it really needs some help!

Hey sp ..... 50's? We had 6" of snow overnight and the temp hasn't gone over 15 degrees all day. Kind of put a "freeze" on my progress for a while. Your steering system is going to need a little TLC for sure. Are you trying to stay original on your rebuild or are you just rebuilding? I bought the whole steering system for I think around $125 with a new wheel. I decided to change it after talking with yanks about his new system. I haven't tried to install it yet but according to yanks it goes in fairly easy. But that's not going to work if you are trying to stay original. I am trying to get out to my storage unit to pick up some items and a few pics of my old steering wheel but I just can't seem to get out there.

Jon with all that snow you will probably need your shovel to get to storage. :D
Well I,m not going completely original but I,d like to keep it close. I am raising to full transom and I,m not sure yet how to finish off splash well area.. I,m thinking maybe two small seats on each side of small splash well.
I.m open to all suggestions:cool:

Hey sp ....... I made it out to the storage unit this morning and the steering wheel is not as good as I remember. I took some photos of it and as you can see it is kind of bad. I guess I should have checked it out before I offered it to you ...... sorry.

Thats ok Jon I appreciate your effort! It is a little rough looking I,m going to keep looking and see what comes up. But ya know i,ll bet there,s some kind of epoxy or filler that could fix that thing. And if it was painted white it would,nt look that bad. Don,t know what to do with the center cap? Was there an emblem on it it looks original ? Don,t throw it in scrap heap yet..
Thanks again, S.P.

Hey sp ..... It may of had an emblem on it at one time but it never had one since I owned it. I am certain that it is the original wheel.

I would concur on a teleflex-type rotary helm.

I adapted my original steering bezel and steering wheel to a used teleflex system that came on a wreck of a 14' wellcraft which provided my Suzuki repower. By using the '64 Taylor Made steering wheel with MFG "3-whale" center cover I maintained the retro looks. That and I really can't think of any warm fuzzies to the squeaky, rattly, noisy cable steering that went away and the transom area is much cleaner looking without the cables (my boat is primarily a fishing vessel and I troll a lot. Noises get annoying when you are doing 2.3mph for hours at a time.) I would consider this as a very good option.

Install is not bad but I have to actually move and/or suspend the motor to pull the piston on the motor end. The cable is quite rigid. Install involved (for me) a little clearancing of the backside of dash area and drilling new holes for three mounting bolts. I think I had to bush out the helm itself and get longer bolts as it initially protruded too far above bezel to be visually acceptable.

I had to drill three holes as well and also had to make the hole in the dash a little larger. I have not yet installed it so I don't know if I will have any clearance issues under the dash.

Hey sp ....... that's sweet. I have to admit that is the first time that I have ever seen a hardtop like that .... but I am a newbie to the boating world. I like it.

Thanks Jon ,The only thing bad with the H/T is there,s not much head room . I wish I could make some kind of hatch over the helm that allow me to stand up without messing up the look,s.

Same for me. I used the teleflex, in the smallest size they made, and I still had to modify the cable hole in the splashwell to keep from putting a kink in the cable. Also had to modify the attachment point at the motor, as a 69 johnson was not originally designed for cable steering. The dash was kinda simple. Slightly larger hole for the helm, but the bezel provided covered it nicely. Original wheel is in tact, and I just re-mounted it on the new helm. Someday, when it's not -6 outside, I'll get some pics...

Yep a little cold. I had today off but gave up playing with the boat after a few minutes even though it is garaged. 12 below last night here, and not feeling balmy this afternoon.

Instead, on to reverse-engineering an aftermarket spring kit for Off Shore Side Planers to work on my Yellowbird Glow Birds. Custom-made tattle flags out of acrylic, and the reverse engineering makes the flag pop UP when a fish strikes instead of pop down like the Big Jons and Off Shores do.

That, and the original seat bases basically have you sitting on the floor almost anyway. I hated that so much. But sitting on the floor AND having a roof at head height would be annoying.

Have you thought about making a duplicate hard top that is taller? Then some taller seats for leg comfort? Not that you want or need anything else to do or spend money on, but have you thought of putting pedestal seats in? That is what I did- the 13 or 14-inch pedestals gave me ergonomic knee bending but elevated me above the windshield at eye level. about $15- $20 if you look around.

The air stream is still above eye-level at speed, but rain will get you anyway if you don't duck. And you would have issues with how to fill in between the hard top and the windshield.

Thinking "out loud" here with rambling thoughts but not too convinced any of my ideas are any good.... I built a bimini for mine (smaller boat - Niagara as you may know), but it would be nicer to have an enclosed area out of the dew for overnight camping or to make heatable space for winter fishing without the brunt of the freezing wind....

Freezing wind!!! If it,s windy and freezing I,m staying in:eek: It,s about 65 deg outside now I just might have to put my jacket on.:D I surf in the winter with a wet suit other than that I,m a wimp when it gets cold.. I have been thinking about seats and have'nt come up with a good plan yet. I like what Woodonglass did with his with the removable bench to fishing seats. This boat will be mostly used for cruzzen and tubing . We usually use son in laws little tri-hull in the picture above for fishing the salt marshes and St. Johns down here.
I was thinking maybe a hinged lid big enuff for my head and shoulders to fit thru while docking, ramping, and getting on plane. Otherwise it,s stick your head out the side like a dog with his tongue floppen in the breeze.:p
Sorry I forgot which thread I was on. here,s the tri-hull.

Ok sp ...... you said that you have a solution to the headroom problem with the hardtop but you haven't told us what it is.
