64 Evinrude 28hp won't run full out

I'm glad I found this forum. Very helpful folks. This question is about a 1964 Speeditwin I recently got. It idles great, runs mid-speed fairly well, but when I turn it up to full throttle it revs up for just a few seconds then comes back down. I've got a service manual, and pretty good mechanical skills, but little experience with outboards. My gut feeling is electrical, but I'm not even sure why I'm thinking that. Anybody got any pointers on what I should check first?<br />Thanks!<br />Lewis

I would check the high speed jet in the carb and make sure that it is perfectly clean. After that chck your ignition coils and make sure that they are not breaking down under a load and you are running on just one or one and a half cylinders.
