Welcome to Iboats, Bigmac!

You should be able to find the model number on th nameplate, which is mounted between the two transom brackes, on the top of the swivel bracket.

Somewhere around that time, they dropped the fully-adjustable carb. If there's a control coming straight out from the carb bowl, linked to a knob up by the slow speed mixture control, then that may be out of adjustment. Follow Joe Reeves advice in this thread:
Another idea - check the linkage to make sure the armature plate (directly underneath the flywheel) is turning all the way to it's stop, and that the carb's throttle plate is opening as you advance the throttle.

Best money is spent on a service manual. It's like buying $10 bills at $5 a peice, and it helps your mental state as well. Once you know the model, we can point you in the direction of some good ones. Parts are easily had - you can get most stuff from your local Johnson/Evinrude dealer, or even some aftermarket parts from Iboats. A lot of the electric-shift stuff is NLA, so it'll be a priority to check out it's health.

Tell us what you find!

Oh, I think I see what you mean - the RPMs are going up but the boat isn't moving fast?

First think - make sure you have the correct lower unit oil in the drive. Those selectric shifts absolutly need OMC/BRP 'Premium Blend' gearcase lube. Regular 90 weight lube will cause them to slip.
Also, make sure the prop's hub isn't slipping. It doesn't sound likely since it doesn't do it in reverse, but it's worth checking. Put a line across the part of the propeller where the pin goes through to the part where the blades attach with a magic marker. Take the boat out for a run and check to see if the mark still lines up. Unseen between the hub and the blades is a rubber cushion that slips if the prop strikes the ground hard enough.
40472S does in fact check out as a '64 model.
