Got a fiberglass kit and worked a bunch of hours sanding and cleaning hull and used kit about 4 inches either side of large crack and so to make sure, as seen little drops in other places, decided to go ahead and do entire hull. Now there is a way to spend about 12 hours.

Today started sanding and cleaning the upper shell as the old gel coat is blistered and messed up all over boat. So one side done and other side in the morning and down pretty much to original paint which is now looks good sanded to about 220 and McQuires. I thought I was just taking off old wax and stuff but neighbor said it is old gel coat which he called clear coat.

I was thinking of repaint but not so sure now. Can clear coat be shot with hvlp 3 stage rig? I use it for finishing guitars and lacquer and used it to paint and coat deck. But fiberglass may be a different thing.

Re: 64 evinrude restore.

These are what I started with today. The pic of the front is where I used acetone (but would not take away crud or blister on finish) and then sanded. Will show side where I worked today in the morning as it is now dark.

Re: 64 evinrude restore.

here are additional pic's of boat after Acetone, sanding, wet sanding and using Meguiars #7.

What I don't know is if I am through clear coat and down to paint, or through a lot of clear coat my nephew shot over old gel coat and if need to shoot a clear coat, which if I do not have to would be great. I have a HVLP gun rig as noted and would get a compressor if needed. Just my garage is my guitar shop business also, so finding a place to shoot and cure.

Pic's of passenger side where in above photo blistered etc. This is just sanded 220 320 Very lightly) and then 400 wet and MacQuires #7 about 1.5 hours of work.

Now will get better buff stuff and swirl remover. I am not sure where to go from here. Not sure if need gel coat/clear coat or what.
