I just got a 64 40hp big twin evinrude. It will start up on starting fluid but will not idle or even keep running on starting fluid. The fuel pump is pumping some fuel and I cleaned the carburettor bowl out. Should the safety switch have power with the key in the run position? And could the safety switch cause the engine to die after letting of the ignition key fro the start position? It won't start without staring fluid witch made me think it was a fuel pump or carb problem but since it won't run on starting fluid makes me think its an ignition problem? Any ideas?

Re: 64 evinrude won't start/ idle

Howdy, ndralle.

Welcome to iboats. :)

First: NEVER use ether starting fluid in a 2 stroke engine. It contains no lubricant and is explosive. It washes away lubrication and can burn holes in pistons. Always use a premix fuel.

Go to the Engine FAQs and do the troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

I got the starting fluid from a boat store and it has lubrication in it for a two stroke. I don't seem to be getting power to the safety switch with the key in run position. Could this cause the motor to die or is this switch only for starting purposes?
