64 Johnson 5.5

This motor only has one knob for rich or lean. There's linkage that connects what I believe to be high speed and low speed adjusters. Does anyone know when adjusting rich to lean whether both are supposed to turn or does the bottom shaft stay idle? When adjusting the top shaft (i.e. the smaller one) it is the only one that turns, the actual knob turns around the outside of the lower shaft. Is this normal?? Thanks

Randy,
If memory serves....that's the wrong knob. The original setup had 2 knobs, one within the other. The inner knob was a red pointer type and adjusted the High speed needle (lower needle). Around that inner knob was a White outer knob that adjusted the upper Slow speed mixture needle.
A friend of mine has a 1962 5hp Johnson with the knobs as described above. Perhaps the design was changed to make the Slow mixture needle easily adjustable (with the knob like yours) . Since the High speed mixture is seldom adjusted after being properly set, it doesn't have a dedicated knob. Pop off the knob and linkage, adjust the High speed mixture (lower needle). Reduce motor speed to idle and adjust Slow speed needle. Replace knob and linkage for upper needle so that needle can be adjusted a bit lean (clockwise) or rich (counter clockwise) when knob is turned either way from center.

If you find the lower needle hard to adjust, try loosening the packing nut a bit.

Earlier models had two knobs as just described. However, after they went to a fixed high speed jet, they put a dummy shaft in place of the adjustable high speed needle, and only one knob to control the slow speed adjustment. That is what you have. Perfectly normal. Sit back and relax, it isn't broken.

Sweet, I've only had this motor 1 week and only heard it run a few min. the day I bought it. If it was broke I wanted to get it fixed before spring. I want to be on the water at the first opportunity. Thanks for the help

Hi Randy,
You have a fixed high speed jet. The linkage only adjusts the idle speed needle. Previous incarnations of your motor had both adjustable so the left the positioning and such where it was in the cowling. The "high speed" part you are seeing is simply a slug that the knob rides on.

I hate to differ but I thought the fixed high speed jets only started in '66. I don't have the parts diagram for the later models though so cant look. Is it actually that way on the parts diagram?

I have one of these motors setting here looking me right in my face.I can`t find a plate on it,but I bought it in 68,new.It has two knobs.Both have numbers and letters below the knobs,but the high speed knob don`t turn.It don`t look like the picture.Probably different motor..

Could you be mistaken on the year of your "68"? The 1968 was a 6 horsepower and did not have an adjustable high speed jet or knob.

Yes I made a mistake.I found the plate[it`s funny what a light will do].The serial no.is 5520---20046.It is an Evinrude,Fisherman.I`m pretty sure I bought it in 68.It might have been on hand a while.
