Re: 64 Starchief Resto

We are debating as to where we want to send the w/s. and I have the top w/s which we like because I think it makes it look unique. We will probably replace with new lexon since it is faded and it would be stupid not to change that one after I change the bottom. So only issue is finding new trim for the lower. Also I haven't measured the hatch. It doesn't look cut up at all and wether original or not it has all the buttons for a bra. But there was no lid when I got it so I'll have to find a good match or totally replace the trim THat is there

First my apologies for my typing, most times that I respond I am on my cell phone so its a bit tough, I looked around at other pictures and the hatch does seem to be alot bigger than what it origanally was. I like it because I can fit right down in it and i'm no small guy. Makes it nice for working around.

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

Ok I may sound fairly stupid with this but how do I differentiate between a stainless rivet and a non stainless rivet. A trucking company I have spoke to who does alot of paint warned me that if I use stripper and remove all the paint the new paint will bubble if the rivets are stainless because it removes a certain coating. I spoke to a buddy of mine who also paints trucks and he said the same thing. Hopefully someone can help me out because some of the rivets are very hard making me believe they are a stainless rivet. Hopefully I didn't screw myself....

Well, I don't know if we crossed this bridge yet but you want to avoid totally stripping paint off of alum if you can help it. See, alum doesn't really like paint and the average Joe job will never be as good as what it was from the factory.

So, on the rivets, why wouldn't you be using alum rather than stainless again?

this boat has about 5 lyers of paint and some is regular house paint and we need to do some work on the side rails so we unfortunately have to strip most of it and i dont plan to use stainless rivets i just know that the person who had the boat previously did some half *** repairs and i dont want to have an issue when i do paint and i have a guy who paints who is going to help out so that shuld be ok as long as i make sure i dont have the stainless steel rivet issue

Decided to start fitting wood since the weather in buffalo hasn't been cooperating to get the boat outside so we can remove more paint and powerwash it before we gluvit and hang the boat for paint. Bench tops with openings, still need hinges obvously and have the inside ply cut for the shelf and then the backs are cut and once we get the front piece made tomarrow they will all be off for apolstry. Third pic is our helper Cabs Chug-a-lug, aka: lugnut, bubs, warthog. Been with us 14 years. he cleans up all the sawdust and blast material. Wish he would be around to ride in the boat, i know he would love it but I don't believe he will make it till then but he has been surprising us. All the reason to hope she is ready for early spring because if he is still with us I hope to take him for a ride.

Hurry up. Lugnut deserves a ride for all the cleaning up he's done. A good time for wood work since you have the inside room. Warmer too.

Yea, hopeing to have all the wood except for the flooring done by next week, and possibly not the podiums becasue we haven't decided what exactly we are doing for that part. We want to do Tik or Oak runners instead of a solid floor so we have to make supports to run the wood lenghtwise but yea he has been an awesome dog. I'm not looking forward to him going but I know its soon.

Start a new thread in the resto specifically about your windshield. I know a couple guys there have made them or had them made and will have sources.

Having it linked here may help:

1964 Starchief windshield

Try Granger

Or
Polycarbonate 48" x 96" 1/8" Thick

3/16" or 1/4" may be much more expensive and difficult to bend at either gunwale.

Aluminum:

are just a few aluminum places online

You may have to use a combination of a 'U' channel along the bottom of the replacement 'glass' and attach that to a 'J' molding that has been attached to the bow's metal.

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

Hello everyone, it's been a while since being in here. Kinda got caught up in other things with life. Boat is back on track, almost ready for paint, all the wood except for the consoles are cut. Going to be sending them out for fabric next couple weeks. Biggest issue still is getting a windshield. I think UPD will be the only place to get one but then I still have to hope it fits right and I can find an extrusion that will work well. HOpe everyone is doing well with their projects.

Matt--

with all the boats totaled by Sandy, there's not a single windshield you can find that fits? doesn't have to be from a SC.
