65 Evinrude not firing

Hey there folks,

I got into some bad luck when my boat sank at the dock. I have got it to the point of cranking but not firing.

It did start at one point then I shut it down to spray lighter fluid in the compression chambers. The idea of this was to try to burn off all the oils and such that I had put in there to prevent any salt damage.

I've got a good spark, lot's of fuel it looks like going to the plugs.

Thanks,
Captain Bob
Could it be plugged jets? Stuck float??

First, what motor do you have? Is it a 1965 Einrude of some horsepower? Is a 65hp Evinrude? If so, what year is it?

Spraying lighter fluid into your motor seems like a bad idea to me. If you have had salt water in it, it should be immediately disassembled. Trying to "burn off all the oils and such," would be the last thing in the world that I would do, because whatever lubrication remained, would tend to protect the "inards" from corrosion.

Re: 65 Evinrude not firing

If it sank in salt water and was not immersed in fresh water right away or run it's probably in serious condition inside... The etching on the finished surgaces (crank, rods) is said to start within hours after salt water immersion... Oh, welcome to the forum... what engine is it? Did you take the carb(s) apart and clean em all of water? did you pull the flywheel off and check for rusted points or water still in there? If you're getting good spark? (did you use a proper tester?) then it's probably carb(s) related...
