65 HP Evinrude Shift Problems

I have a boat with a 1972 65 HP Evinrude. It worked great last year. This year when we put it on the lake it would not shift into reverse. But when you just hook it up to the hose in the yard it goes in just fine. We also had it out this last weekend and it some how slipped into forward from neutral all by its self a few times. Now when you try accelerating it seems like it keeps slipping out of drive and then quickly back in. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi. I have a Johnson 65, l972. Make sure your lower unit is full and with
he right fluid. Had the same problem, drained and refilled now it works.

I just changed the oil lower unit oil a month ago. I know it has a small leak in a seal because it came out i little milky but not bad. I'll try it though, Thanks!!

Re: 65 HP Evinrude Problems

I would check the fluid level again. If you have to refill, make sure you use BRP Premium Blend. Do not use Hi-Vis in this gearbox.

If the gearbox is leaking, you need to get that fixed, because you will ruin the shift solenoids eventually, if you don't. Since they are very hard to get your hands on, that is something that you don't want!

Start with the crush washers that go under the drain and vent plugs - this is the most common area for water intrusion. Replace the washers every time you remove the plugs.

Re: 65 HP Evinrude Problems

Finally got around to checking the oil and it looks good. Had a few spots of white but overall looked good. When you try to put it in reverse you can hear that something is not moving far enough because it sounds like the tips of the gears are grinding on each other. Anyone go any ideas? Thanks!

As stated above be sure you are using the right gear lube. I have a similar motor and it will not shift right without the proper viscosity lube. Mine has an electric shift and the standard gear lube is too thick. I bought the Johnson lube and it made a difference.

Ok turns out i did have the wrong gear lube. I now have the right stuff and I just went to the lake to try it out. When i put it in drive and accelerate it still slips out and then back in making a banging or knocking type sound. When i tried to put it in reverse it ground the gears for a little bit as usual but then finally went in. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm having a similiar problem and wonder if I'm using the right gear lube. The guy at NAPA sold me this CRC Marine Hypoid 90 Lower Unit Gear Lube for my 10Hp Johnson but my manual says to use OMC Type "C". The Hypoid 90 is an
SAE 80W90 weight. Is this OK to use?

It depends, does your motor have electric shift? If it does then it sounds like you have the wrong stuff. Your better off to go to a local repair shop or marina and ask. Anyone got any ideas with my prob? Thanks!

Re: 65 HP Evinrude Shift Problems

I have been doing some reading on some other sites and now think my problem could be with the shift control. Maybe my wires have a loose connection somewhere or the controller is bad. It goes into forward because no electrical current is needed. As for reverse 2 wires (Green and Blue) need to have 12v applied to them in order for the lower unit to shift into reverse. If there is less then 12v the selenoid is probably not fully engaging. Does this sound right? Thanks!

Re: 65 HP Evinrude Shift Problems

Just got done checking all of the voltages and everything works good. I hooked it up to the hose and ran it and it shifts perfectly. Then I took it to the lake and it was the same old thing. Reverse doesn't work and you can hear the tips of the gear grinding. And in drive it still seems like it is slipping in and out of gear and the motor jumps and bangs. Ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!
