Is there a difference in a mechanical or electric shift for a stator and rectifier? I believe I need both, will check using another post, in AM. Saw a used one that is listed from a mechanical shift mine is electric. Think mine is a 1972 or 73, 3 buttons for elec shift. The one for sale is from a 1973 65 HP Johnson, mechanical shift. Would it work? Thanks! Leont

Re: 65 HP Johnson Stator, Rectifier

As I just wrote in your other thread, the bulk of your motor seems to be a 1972 Johnson or Evinrude. If the other motor that you want to take parts from is truly a 1973, yes, the stator and rectifier will work on your motor. This, of course, assumes that you current motor actually is a 1972 model.

The part number for the stator on each motor is 581114 and the part number for the rectifier is 580841.

I guess my next thought is to ask you why you think you need a new stator and rectifier. I would also ask whether you know if the parts from the other motor actually work.

Re: 65 HP Johnson Stator, Rectifier

I will have to verify that the stator is bad by using the instructions I found on another thread. My stator has dark gray material that has melted down on the engine. Sort of goo like. Took it to the lake yesterday and it would start but when you put it in gear it would bog down and die. (New to me boat) The one I am looking at threw a rod and was running before that. I would still be just gambling it is good. The stator and rectifier from the other engine come as one purchase. From another thread I read that the rectifier could be a reason the stator went bad. This is my first outboard (as you probably have guessed) I have always had I/O's Appreciate the help.

If your stator is oozing goo, its a pretty safe bet that it has problems. I am surprised, however, that the motor would start at all. The bogging down when in gear, is probably because you have one or two cylinders that are not firing.

At this point, I think that the best thing that you can do is to buy an OEM service manual and study it. This will help you diagnose problems and will help you understand your motor better in general.

BTW, you mentioned in the other thread that you may not have an original transom/swivel bracket. Can you take pics of it from front and rear, so we can identify it?

Re: 65 HP Johnson Stator, Rectifier

Finally got the new power pack and installed. Time and finances, slowed progress. Have fire on all cylinders and running cool. Took it to the lake today and it ran but bogs down, will not get up to speed. I think I need more work on the carb.s. I changed from reg. to mid-range gas and used the oil recommended on another thread, TC-W3, a lot less smoke. Thanks to all I am at least now running and have confirmed that I have a 72' 65HP Johnson. I need to rebuild the carb.s. I just cleaned them up before. Thanks again, have learned a bunch from this forum. Leont
