hey guys,
So i went ahead and bought a boat today, a 14ft sportsman f/g it has a 65 merc on it the serial number is 7074254, so far it has run great, Iam going to take it out on the lake tomorow and really give it a run, anyways Iam wondering if you could tell me what year this motor is or how I can find out, and also the motor does not have an airfilter that I can see, I took the cowling off and the 2 carbs are just right there, so I might have to get an airfilter for it, and any other information, or things to look for on this particular motor would be lots of help, thanks in advance heres a pic of my new baby d:)

Re: 65 hp questions

if it is a 3 cylinger it is a 1976 canadian OEM manual is 90-75512 you need OEM manual. watch ebay or you can purchase at oldmercs.com most outboards don;t have air filters, and yours doesn't. if this motor has sat up for any length of time there are certain thing to check before running, 1st and formost is when the impeller(waterpump) was last serviced. all it is, is a rubber spoked wheel, the dry out and come aparts, thus clogging cooling passages, and the engine overheats. the engine faq is down, so email me and i will send you the post "awakening a sleeping outboard" very informative, and necessary. yes it was fully serviced less then a year ago, reaplced the wires, the impeller, lower oil, spark plugs, fixed ignition, and choke circuit, and a few other small things, and I have all the receipts for it, the boat was strickly used on the lake for the last 9 years, and before that the owner thinks it was only used on the lake, the boat appears to be in excellent shape, there isn't any rust anywhere on it, one other thing I noticed is that there was a pull handle thing tucked away inside the engine compartment is this normal, backup just in case the starter doesn't work? if so how do i set it up or use it. anyways i will email you also, and be lookig around for a OEM manual, oh and why don't outboards have airfilters? this is very strange to me.

Re: 65 hp questions

all we can figure out is that some of the early ones had them, and found it not necessary. little dust on the water.
