65 Johnson 6 horse pops in to neutral

my 65 Johnson 6HP pops in to neutral at times. I get no crunching or popping when this happens and its only for a second or two. I was following the thread about the hub spinning, but this engine's prop has no "hub" that can spin and the prop is held on with just a pin. what could be my issue?

BTW, im not sure its a 65, the P.O. said it was. here is the serial # J2555201 and model # CD-22M

sounds like the clutch dog is going. very common.

CD-22 is a 1965.

That motor has the gearcase with the spring loaded drivetrain relief system in it. I suppose you could be having p[roblems with that.
