65 Sportwin impeller and housing question, need Expert advice

Winter project: 1965 9.5 Sportwin.

My philosophy for old outboards: #1 can you get it to run? #2 can you get it to run for more than 5 seconds? #3 if you can get it to run more than 5 seconds, stop and pull the lower to check/drain/refill the gear lube and replace plastic washers #4 replace impeller and/or rebuild water pump #5 after spending money on lower/pump resume testing/tuning with engine in barrel.

I've not been into the pump on a 9.5 before. Need some guidance.
I see a stainless wear plate on the bottom of the pump, so far so good. Then impeller above that. But the housing circumferance where the "fingers" of the impeller would rub, and the upper part (opposite of the wear plate on the bottom) show no signs of smoothness like they were ever rubbed by another part, and are not stainless steel like I'm familiar with. As a matter of fact the surfaces look like neglected, pitted aluminum that has been in water for 40 yrs. Is this correct? Or has someone "fixed" this before I got it? Online parts diagrams don't show anything missing, but I thought for sure I'd find all stainless wear areas on this water pump like I've seen before.

I uploaded a picture to show as much detail as I could.

The housing is aluminum and they become pitted over time. They will not give 100% performance once pitted but will work. There are no aftermarket housings available, but the OEM kits 0382296 include all necessary parts as well as the new housing.

You might find a chrome kit at sea-way.com. The part number was 0379449.

I'd clean it up with fine sandpaper, put in a new impeller, and see how it pumps. If it pumps water, I'd run it and not worry about it.

I touched mine up with a dremel.....I'm not sure it made any difference. The new impeller will probably be sufficient. You might want to get a seal kit.... It comes with new seals for both the prop, and water pump bushings, New skeg seal, plastic washers, and a new o-ring for the shift-rod. The shift-rod seal on mine was shot, and allowing a fair bit of oil/water slurry to develop.

Thank you for your replies. I'll just touch up the housing and get a new impeller. It might have been pumping water before, I just never had it running long enough to open the thermostat (that check is for another day) I'm worried about breaking bolts/thermostat housing!

The old impeller was really worn, possibly even the original!. Thank you for sharing your experience gentlemen.

I'm worried about breaking bolts/thermostat housing!

Spray them with some penetrating oil, let it soak overnight, and you should have no problem getting them off. Test thermostat in a pan of water. It should open 140-150 degrees. Or just replace it - they're not expensive.

Where did you get your seal kit from? whats the part number?
