Winter project: 1965 9.5 Sportwin.
My philosophy for old outboards: #1 can you get it to run? #2 can you get it to run for more than 5 seconds? #3 if you can get it to run more than 5 seconds, stop and pull the lower to check/drain/refill the gear lube and replace plastic washers #4 replace impeller and/or rebuild water pump #5 after spending money on lower/pump resume testing/tuning with engine in barrel.
I've not been into the pump on a 9.5 before. Need some guidance.
I see a stainless wear plate on the bottom of the pump, so far so good. Then impeller above that. But the housing circumferance where the "fingers" of the impeller would rub, and the upper part (opposite of the wear plate on the bottom) show no signs of smoothness like they were ever rubbed by another part, and are not stainless steel like I'm familiar with. As a matter of fact the surfaces look like neglected, pitted aluminum that has been in water for 40 yrs. Is this correct? Or has someone "fixed" this before I got it? Online parts diagrams don't show anything missing, but I thought for sure I'd find all stainless wear areas on this water pump like I've seen before.
I uploaded a picture to show as much detail as I could.
