I am currently working on a project, trying to revitalize a 1976 Mercury 650 three-cylinder motor. I was ready to install the rebuilt lower unit, when I noticed that both studs that extend out of the drive shaft housing to connect the lower unit are in really bad shape. Threads are really stripped on one, and non-existent on the other making them useless. Attempts appear to have been made to epoxy the nuts in place. Could be a deal-breaker. but before I throw in the towel, has anyone ever replaced these studs? They appear to be turned into the drive shaft housing using very elongated hex-heads. Don't know how involved I want to get. It might be easier to switch out the housing for a used one, and your advice in finding one will be invaluable.

Aye aye, Captain! I am on it! I'm thinking I should be able to get a hold of the hex portion of the stud that runs between the threaded ends. Just hope they don't break. I'm soaking them in penetrating oil the best I can right now. Thanks for the advice and the push. You guys are the best alternative to that local boating buddy I don't have!
