I am getting oil out my wheep holes in my lower unit so I want to replace the seals in the lower unit. It is a 1966 35 hp and I can not seem to locate a seal kit for it. Can anybody help me out on where to find one.

Thanks

Is it a two part lower unit? Quick silver number is 26-820645A- 1. Mercury sells them. Cost is around 35 bucks. You will have to make the gasket between the two units. Can make one out of gasket paper and non hardening permatex. Verify first that the oil is lower unit oil. If it smells like gas it is unburned gas and oil mix. If it stinks so bad you start to gag it is lower unit oil. First take off lower drain plug and let a few drops come out. Does water come out or milky white nasty smelling stuff come out?

I believe it is a 2 part unit. It looks like there is a gaskek in the middle. The oil coming out of the holes was real milky but it smelled like gas. There was a little bit of pure water that came out of the lower drain plug. This motor has not run for a while and I wanted to use it so I put it in a big garbage can to run it. it ran rough so that might be the reason for the unused gas.

Thanks

Re: 66 35hp seal kit

Water coming out of the lower unit means a definate leak. That lower unit should be the same for a 35,45 and 55 HP. Post your model number. I am curious. I believe 66 was still considered West Bend or the first year of Chrysler. Number will be something like 35187. Fuel system is probably way overdue for rebuild. Before dumping too much money you want to verify you have good compression (125 or better on both cylinders) and good spark on both plugs. A seal kit may or may not fix the problem with the leak. Older motors develop wear marks where the seals rub and can leak even when pressure tested as good. If it were me before taking it apart I would find a way to pressure test it to see if you can find the leak. If it is just a drain or fill plug or even just a drive shaft seal they are easy to replace without taking anything apart. I used a basketball needle drilled into a screw then sealed with RTV. Pump a little air while the lower unit is under water and look for bubbles. For the rough idle rebuild fuel pump and carb and replace all the fuel lines. Get a manual A clymer is pretty good or go to chrysler crew and buy a downloadable factory manual.

it is model # VW 61 19087A. Where did you stick the backetball needle to pressure test it.

Re: 66 35hp seal kit

There are easier ways then what I did. I drilled a hole in a screw I believe was a 3/8 inch and sealed it with RTV. I bought the screw at a hardware store and just matched the threads to the original drain screw. I am sure there is some way to do this with rubber or plastic but I could not come up with a way.

Chrysler put out by seaking. I think the correct number is VWB19087A
