I recently bought a '66, 6 hp Evinrude outboard. Bare in mind that I'm new to working on boat motors, but I have worked on Jeep motors quite a bit. I have a shop manual for the engine. I have tried cranking the engine and sometimes it will run and other times it won't. I thought maybe it was flooding, but I checked the spark plugs and saw no spark when cranking on the occasion that it wouldn't crank. Sometimes it fires and sometimes it doesn't. Any thoughts on where to start? I want to learn this on my own instead of taking it to a mechanic - just in case I break down out on the water.

Intermittent spark is likely caused by dirty points. The points are located under the flywheel. You'll need a 3-point harmonic puller to remove the flywheel properly and safely. A basic service manual at your local library ought to cover maintenance such as this...<br />- Scott

Also, when you get the flywheel off check the condition of the coils. If they have cracks in the epoxy might be time for new ones.
