66 evinrude- 40hp gesrcase rebuild

I am replacing/rebuilding the gearcase o a 1966 evinrude model 40553m . when I got ready to reassemble , I realized that I could mot recall which way the pictured washer is installed. does it go in with the tabs up and down [in line with the drive shaft] or with the tabs side to side ? thanks

Look at the two halves of the gear case, there should be notches for the tabs to fit into and answer that question

looking at the housing , it appears that it could be installed either way . hence the question here

The circlip at the back has a bevel on it and can only go one way.----Magnifying glass helps on that .

Tabs go up and down.
