'66 Evinrude 80hp

I'm looking for a coil for a '66 Evinrude 80hp Starflite model 80693C. Evinrude part #379569. OEM are pretty expensive. Does anyone know if there are any new current coils that will cross reference?

Actually you can use any automotive 12v coil.

However...... Many coils fail within a short time if a full 12 volts is applied to them. Such coils require a resistor or resistance wire to drop the voltage to whatever the coil demands.

Bottom line... make sure of the actual voltage the coil requires. Any knowledgeable auto parts service man should be able to guide you on that.

Your 1966 80hp Starflite already has a one ohm resistance wire built into the cable leading forward to the key switch. It is the red & white striped wire. That is it does if you have the original cable and nobody has shortened it.

There are some automotive coils that have resistor built into them. No resistor wire required.

My cable has the white w/ red stripe resistance wire so do I need a coil with or without built in resistor?
If I can use a automotive coil can you tell me which one and where to purchase?

Without the resistor built in. Check your local NAPA dealer.

And when the guy at the auto parts store insists that you need a manufacturer and model, tell him you want a '64 Mercury Comet coil.

No, the Ford/Mercury coils did not have a resistor built in. He could use any ford coil from the 60s - mid 70s, I would think. However, with today's menu driven parts look up systems, you need a year, make and model to look anything up.

of course, if you get an older guy to help you, you can just say Ford coil from a battery - points/coil ignition system, and you will get the right one. The OP probably wants to get a matching condenser (likely .25Mico Farad), just in case the OEM one is some wierd value.
