66 johnson forward/reverse gear question

Im having a problem with the motor jumping out of forward gear under load. I possibly narrowed it down to replacing the clutch dog. I called my local johnson service center, and they told me I might need to replace the forward gear as well, requiring a donation of about $200.00. (im being scarcastic, :) .....) Anyway, I read a post which stated I might be able to switch the forward and reverse gears. When I told this to the guy in the parts department, he told me that the forward and reverse gears have thier own part numbers. That tells me that they are 2 different parts all together. I want to do this as cheap as possible. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can the gears be "swapped" so to speak? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Howdy Furter23,
Welcome to the forum.
To answer your question, I don't know.
If I were you though, I would go to the Ken Cook Marine Publishing web site and buy the parts break-down manual for that engine. In addition to giving you part nos.,it has exploded views of almost all the assemblies which makes disassembly and reassembly a snap. About $30.00.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

It's very possible. I think you'll have to give it a try to find out.
