'66 Merc.1000 outboard's original ignition switch finally gave up. Old switch has 4 terminals on the back. The new one has 5, and I cannot find a diagram to wire it up. Anybody have same problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi chipdude, welcome to iboats!!

On the back of ignition switches, next to each terminal, is a symbol or a letter. List them (both the old switch and the new switch).

Aldo

Re: '66 Merc 1000 replacement ignition switch

Aldo, About my ignition switch on the 1000 Merc outbd.Old switch has A,B,C,I next to the four terminals. New switch has A,B,E,F,G on the back. Also, my cable running from the switch back to the motor has a white, blue, black, red, and orange wires in it. I know that one goes to the choke button and one goes to the neutral inter-lock switch.
Thanks,
Chipdude

This should be the wiring diagram for your motor:
http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/0_1965a/8.pdf

You should be able to figure out what the contacts on the new switch do by using a meter or test lite on them to check for continuity as you turn the key.

The new switch probably has extra terminals for 'mag short' and you won't use those since this motor needs +12V to the ign to run. "Mag short' terminals will have continuity between them only when the ign is turned to 'off'.

HTH...........ed
