I've been breaking a sweat over my grandfather's old merc 110 for a week now. Finally got it to where it will start, however, it won't stay going.
I've checked these things...
-plugs are new
-engine is getting fuel as far up as the carb float (which I've taken apart & cleaned)
-gas tank & fuel line is new.
I've even gotten it to run at full power for a few seconds (have it sitting in a big tank of water. But it never takes long to cut out & die.
I'm at loss for what to do other than perhaps replce the plug leads? Any other ideas? Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!

It sounds like a fuel problem, ck the fuel pump and remove the carb and clean it, blow ever thing out good

Just to add to his advice - based on his and others' recommendations and advice, I did a rebuild on the carb and (integral) fuel pump of my early 70s Merc 110. This is somewhat different, but pretty similar to your carb and fuel pump. I used the fuel pump rebuild kit (about $10) and the carb gasket kit (another $10) rather than the full carb rebuild kit which was around $60. Using a OEM manual (although in this particular case, the Seloc manual has exactly the same diagrams), I removed carb/fuel pump and completely disassembled. Soaked carb and all metal parts in cleaner (gallon can w/ basket) over night. Then I sprayed out all tiny orifices with spray carb. cleaner and then with a can of compressed air. Reassembled with new fuel pump kit and gaskets. All this was very simple - I'd never done it before. The risk is losing or breaking parts of course. Aside from the overnight soaking and pre-reading the manual, the actual work was less than a couple of hours for a rank beginner.

Yep, That's at least part of the problem. The fuel pump was wrotten to the core. I'll replace the fuel lines while I'm at it. I assume that's something I can get at advance or NAPA?
Thanks guys...

The pump kit you'll probably have to get at a dealer or on line. For what it's worth, my local dealer has essentially the same prices for this stuff as the online sources. The only issue is speed of getting stuff if he doesn't have it in stock. Sometimes, depending on the status of his normal order cycle, I can get it a little quicker on line - but not always.

The fuel lines, of course, are generic.

I recommend doing the carb as well as the fuel pump, just to get it in good status. Water pump impeller too. Good luck and have fun.
