I am looking to sell an older MFG edinboro custom boat.
The transom is shot.
This would be good for someone who knows how to do the seacast fix.
Everything else on the boat is in good condition.
I might aslo be willing to trade for another boat???
email me if interested.

Re: 66 MFG edinboro Custom

I'm located in central Ohio. I found the boat in a garage next door to my father in law. It has been there for 20 some years. The fun n sun seats are in very good condition. Just one small rip in one. Rest of the boat is in pretty good condition. If I had the time I would probably fix the boat myself, but work keeps me pretty busy. That's why I put it on here. I actually had it for sale locally. When someone came by and told me all about it. ( check out fiberglassics.com/mfg). It's pretty cool. I was asking about 700, but I am willing to negociate a trade maybe. I just want a boat that I could put in the water on the weekend and use.

I've started to tinker with the Johnson Motor. I believe its a 1960 with electric and manual start, 75hp. Does anyone know where I could find a manual on this motor.

Here are some pictures of the motor and boat. I believe I might try and fix the entire boat. Using Seacrest

I was cleaning out the boat and took the seats. They are in great shape. Here is my question: are these boat supposed to have carpet in them. Mine is just a fiber glass floor?

Just wanted to chime in...... You got a great little boat there. If possible you should fix it up. Seacast is easy, and those seats are highly sought after. Especially in good shape. MFG only produced them for a few years. They are called Sun'n Fun seats. My '68 doesn't have carpet. I think most 60's models didn't have it either.

PS. Saw a set for sale at my favorite boat junk yard last Saturday.
PM me for info........

They did not have carpet- Part of what makes the MFG unique is these three things:
  • light weight but strong fiberglass construction
  • nice hull lines for a non-wood boat
  • fiberglass floor and stringers- nothing to rot out or require maintenance!

The floor cleans nicely with a low-pressure power washer or at the car wash. I wouldn't carpet it, especially if you fish! Plus it adds weight. If you were closer I would probably buy that boat - but I think cleaning it up and running it would be a lot of fun for you. That boat will last for many more years properly cared for. Beats $5K down and a payment!

Thanks for the info! No carpet will be put in. I've actually started to buff out the upper portion of the boat. Starting to look good. Once I get a free weekend I will start to dig out the transom. I'll keep everyone informed.

You would be surprised at how easy they pull start, the emergency rope is just long enough to get you one wrap around the flywheel, you set the distributor at TDC by lining up arrows on flywheel (manual start instructions) and give it a pull, I had battery issues only on one occasion and the rope saved me from a tow. Now if you ran the battery down cranking from some other problem then forget about it, but if the motor is raring to go and you just killed the battery with lights fishfinder radio ect the rope is a great option never leave home without it.

Re: 66 MFG edinboro Custom

Any suggestions on how to get the bottom portion of the transom out. Top part of the transom came out easy with a long chisel. Seems like the bottom portion isn't as rotted as the top. Harder to chisel out. Any suggestions would be nice.

Re: 66 MFG edinboro Custom

A long drill bit on an extension worked well for me. I just drilled a bunch of sequential holes and chunked it up. But then again I had some access as I cut the inner transom out and fiberglassed it back in afterwards. Made putting in new solid wood easier...

Re: 66 MFG edinboro Custom

I've gotten almost all the wood transom removed without tearing apart the transom. Bought the long 3/4 drill bit with extender. Now my question is. Where do I buy the seacast? Is there only one place on the internet that sells it. My local marina never even heard of it????

Re: 66 MFG edinboro Custom

Hi gwalkgwalk - You can order it directly from the manufacturer, here's their website:

http://transomrepair.com/zk/

If you email them and ask nicely they'll send you a sample as well as an information packet that gives some more info on the product. It also has a dimensions formula that will tell you exactly how much you need. Be prepared though, it's not cheap!

Now...how about some more pictures!

Yea it's 210 for a 5 gallon bucket. I'll probably need two get two 5 gallon buckets. That's more than I bought the boat for. But I want to finish this project by next season.
I usually respond from my iPhone so I can't upload pictures. But as soon as I get to a regular computer I'll upload some. Thanks for the help.

Re: 66 MFG edinboro Custom

Nope, not quite yet. I have two buckets of Seacast and all the fiberglass stuff I need, I just haven't had enough time recently to get it done. I'm headed to MA in a couple of weeks and plan to finish the transom as soon as I get back. I think EdC used Seacast on his Edinboro restoration too and his transom looked rock solid!:D
