Hello all, Having a problem finding out were the wires that connect to the coil belong.
Need to know if the single wire from distributor (black)connects to the -neg. side the 2 brown wires also connect to the -neg. Then the only remaining wire white now yellow to the +pos ? Any help appreciated greatly...My manual doesn't show this.

dont think so, dist to neg side of coil, brown wire and brown wire W/ stripe to coil +, the remaining wire (white) could be from the shift interupter and goes coil - to stall the motor shifting out of gear.tach wire is usually grey and goes coil -

Re: 67 120hp 4cyl inline coil wire, correct placement ?

So basically I'm hearing that it may or may not be correct? Only one I think may be correct for sure is the distributor single black wire from - .Can't get fire at the coil. Changed the ignition switch ,new coil.
I have been trying to follow instructions Don S has posted but if the wires are screwed up at the coil it may be impossible. Going to try your way Bt today ,will it hurt anything if they are wrong or just not function until correct?
I hooked a jumper up between the pos.side battery to the pos side coil then tested the coil that resulted in having power to both + & - of coil. Can the slave solenoid mounted on the side of the engine (not the starter ) prevent fire at the coil? Any help greatly appreciated.
If engine cranks with the throttle in neutral & does not when in gear does that mean the shift interrupter is working?

maybe one of the attachments will help. depends on your voltage regulator as to which one is correct. or maybe this will help too. both attachments can be found there too.

good luck with her..

Thanks Ziggy both are helpful. Looks as though I have them backwards just couldn't see getting them that mixed up but looks that way like Bt described seems correct & that's what the attachments show. I am looking at a clymer 1964-1985 stern drive shop manual mkast.

You may have found out by now, that manual is as close to worthless as possible.
Post the engine and sterndrive serial numbers in a new posting and someone will post a link to the Mercruiser manuals.

Everything I see says white to + , brown & distributor wire to - Going to go with that for now still doesn't answer the no spark problem.
Going to continue with Dons trouble shooting advice in trying to track down the problem. pulling the big plug ,check & clean plus other connections..... again thanks for the help.

Well, I now have fire at the coil both sides = & -I only have a test light for now.
Is this correct?
Still can't get fire out of the coil tried disconnecting the main coil wire & holding to ground still no fire? I know I need to get a meter on it but I am without .. Can the coil be tested without being connected to the distributor? If not could it be the points or condenser keeping spark from happening?

I should have said have spark at coil with key in the run position now.
Let me ask in another way if you have a spark in the distributor, point & condenser wire connection with the key to run make it consistent with a normal working system? No arching as I can tell with the points themselves....

Thanks! Will do. Let you know what I find. One thing using a test light should you have fire at both the + & - sides of the coil while key is in the run position. My trouble now is no fire coming from the coil. Have fire at the points & condenser connection ,tried removing distributor/points wire still no fire coming from coil main wire out of the tower.

Re: 67 120hp 4cyl inline coil wire, correct placement ?

I now believe the reason for no fire at the coil is a ground issue.
Bad points & condenser. Maybe keeping the circuit open not making contact.
Putting in new set today . I tried jumper to battery + side of coil but neglected to ground & because points & condenser are bad I was not getting the ground needed......
The bracket that holds coil doesn't seem to ground it as thought. I suppose you could check the coil while isolating the distributor but it still has to have a ground. Hum, Learning.

ground, ground, ground, happy to report points , condenser was bad.
Changed & set them according to instructions found in the stickys. Boat fired right up after a little coaxing & is running well.
Thanks for all the help & diagrams.
A few other hopefully smaller obstacles need addressed & then the real test....
