If installing new lower shift cable does the install & tapping process depend upon if new cable installs from the bellows end or from the outside? This particular cable may or may not be an aftermarket. It installs the same way the old one did. I saw in another post that the new cables install from the outside opposed to the old bellow side set up..on this boat.

Re: 67 120hp R shift cable retaining nut tap

Trying to determine if I have a reproduction of the old cable setup or the newer style I have heard about that has to be tapped. If I have the newer style does it install only from the the aft end? Or do you take the new style cable & somehow install from bellows side???
If I have gottin lucky which is doubtful could it be that I have the same style (old style) cable which needs to install like the old one? Without tapping.
Seems to me that if the cables are designed to be installed from the aft end then thats the way it has to go..

The cable I have to install is like the old one there is no separate nut, its all one piece. Does the newer style have a removable nut that attach?s from the aft end?

the new style cables do not have a separate nut, the brass piece that threads into the bellhousing is one piece and attached to the cable

to tell if it threads from the aft look at the orientation of the threads

does the end with the white guide tube have a hex head on the brass portion with the threads on the end of the brass where the rest of the cable comes out??

Not sure what you mean about where the rest of the cable comes out. The core wire or the core wire & sheath? ,the threads are pointed toward the white guide tube.
Just like the old style. The threads are pointedtowards the aft the nut end of the brass has the sheath & wirecomingg out going towards the motor. The manual doesn't say alot about this ....Does the new style screw in from aft while the old style screw in from bellows side? For this boat?

you have the old style cable, begin threading it in from the forward side of the bellhousing
