Was the steering system for the '67 33hp Johnson (RXE-15S) pulley/cable?
The boat I got this motor off of has the "newer" cable/rod type (sorry not sure what it's called).
It looks like the previous owner made a plate that attaches to the front of the handle on the motor. It has a small rod that sticks down which the hole in the steering rod slips over then a cotter pin goes in a hole in the fabricated piece.
Should I go with pulley system? Is there an actual manufactured adaptor for the other type of steering?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Charles

Here's an attempt to show you the "adaptor".
The top 'O' is where it bolts to the motor handle.
The narrow bottom piece is where the steering rod slips on. Cotter pin goes in small lower hole to hold on rod. Hopefully this gives the idea.

-------
|||O|||
|||||||
\|||||/
-----
|||
|o|
---

Depends on what steering you want on your boat, when that motor was made about all that was available was the dual cable sys, you can convert to the single cable either stick or rotary steering sys. Looks like the adapter you have worked for someone else so why not use it.

Re: '67 33hp Steering basics question. Johnson

The bottom of the adaptor is broken so I will need to get this piece refabricated. I'm not sure if it broke due to use or a fall. It must have worked at one time though. The boat it was in no longer had the pulley system in it.

Not running yet. Haven't had much time to work on it. I did get the flywheel turning. I'm waiting on the service manual to arrive. I want to be sure I'm hooking wires up properly. When I recieved this engine all of the wires had just been cut at various points. I did acquire the harness that contains the solenoid so hopefully that will help make the wiring scheme clearer in my mind when I get the manual for extra help.
I also need to remount the starter (to hold down the flywheel cover) so I can at least try to maunually start it.
Thanks,
Charles

The pulley system can be dangerous if it's not properly maintained. I guess one too many Joe Boaters had their system break and the outboard go hard over on them at full throttle, and now nobody makes or uses the system anymore.
Have a look at the Teleflex Transom Support Mount steering kit here and SA27198P below it. I think those are the parts you need. Iboats carries them.

SA27198P looks like it would work but it seems to be missing a bolt or pin that would go down through the hole that is in the L-shaped piece and into the steering rod. Will any bolt do? (As long as the rod has a smooth surface to pivot on of course)

Charles
