i just got off the water and the water pump outlet was not shooting out water it was whstling and steaming is that the sign of a bad water pump. i tried to drop the lower unit but it was held up by the shift shaft. how do i relaese the shaft and how do i replace the water pump. how do i know if i need the whole kit or just the impellar.

Two things:
You have to disconnect the two parts of the shift rod from each other after lowering the gearcase a little.

There is a pin through the drive shaft near the top that supports the bits and pieces that make up the seal at the top. You have to turn the engine (plugs out) until that pin lines up with a slot at the top of the exhaust housing. Then the shaft can be pulled away from the crankshaft​

Once the gear case is off you will be able to remove the water pump housing to reveal the impeller. Inspect the housing to determine if you need a complete overhaul kit or just the impeller.

Now is a good time to change the oil seal below the water pump if there is any possibility that it is leaking

where is the pin located on the outside of the shaft or inside the shaft
