Hi,
I am new to this Web-Site and I am somewhat of a do it yourself'er. I have a 1967 Johnson 60 hp. Model# VX-13A Serial# J2740974. My problem is in the ignition. I purchased the motor a couple of weeks ago and seeing that it had been setting for a while I cleaned the carbs and installed new plugs. After getting the motor to crank I done all final adjustments and had it purring like a kitten for about 30min. then it died. This is where I am at now, I pulled the distributor cap off and checked my points because no fire was getting to my plugs. If I touch my points with a screwdriver I get a spark, if I turn my distributor to make the points open and close I get a spark inside my Dist. cap from the center-to a plug wire terminal (reminder: this is with the cap off the distributor, but still plugged in). My problem is when I put my cap back on I get no fire to my plugs. Someone told me that this was my rotor button grounding out on the shaft. When I us a continuity tester and touch one end (through the plug hole in the top of the cap)to the rotor button and the other end to the main lead coming from the coil there is continuity. If my rotor button was grounding out would there still be continuity? After buying a new coil and condenser I still have this problem. I really do not know what to do next. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi John

Did you get continuity from the button to engine ground?

That would lead me to believe there is a problem with the cap, as you have spark going at least to that point. Inspect the cap closely for cracks. Even a hairline crack in the cap will do it in. Are the points set at .020 on the high spot?

Thanks Rick for helping me,
The points are set to .020 but, I did notice when the points are closed the "butt plate" on the points does not touch the distributor shaft when it is off of the high point.
