I have a 67 60hp johnson motor I just purchased I am trying to do a water pump (with out a manual) and I cannot get the lower unit to drop and I have already dissconnected the gear linkage at mid shaft through the access hole. Does it take a great deal of force to get apart?

Did you remove the hidden bolt? I can't picture the LU off the top of my head, but there are 4 bolts along the sides, and one more hidden under the (if forget the name of the part) plate right above the prop. :D

Should only be the eight bolts holding the lower unit on....or the extension if you have the long shaft. Could be the water tubes are stuck or the drive shaft. Some gently persuasion will probably get it lose. Is it dropping any at all?

The unit drops about a quarter inch twists and turns slightly but thats the most of it. Must be something froze up. Yes I know I should have a manual but I don't and I am trying to get the job done asap. Thank you everyone for the info.

if it has dropped that far it had to be the shift linkage or water tube hung on something
