Re: 67 Johnson 80hp last straw!

If you go to NAPA they and tell them you need a solenoid for a Johnson outboard they usually have a compatible one in stock. I think the last one I bought was apx. $30.00. They have to dig out the book but they have them.

I may be wrong here but I believe the big differance is the rating for constant duty. It was recommended that I use marine solenoids when I set up dual batteries for my truck winch and that is what the guy at the electric motor shop explained to me.

But again I would replace or repair both battery cables before I invested any more in parts.

Round and round going over the same thing again and again from what I am reading.

Some good suggestions have been made.

If you believe the starter is good and battery is good then it has to be:
A) Solenoid
B) Wiring failure
C) Motor bind overheating starter

Simple tests to eliminate everything:
Get 2 short battery cables (a few feet long)
Place FULLY CHARGED battery near motor.
Connect Negative cable to battery and Starter bolt or near by bolt.
connect Positive wire to Starter but NOT to battery.
Now the fun. Press the positive wire to Battery +. Starter should Spin motor.
A) motor turns over cleanly - Wiring or Solenoid is bad
B) Starter Malfunctions - Starter Bad/Low Amperage in Battery or Binding Motor - retest with plugs out. Turn motor by hand with plugs out. O.K.?
Test with Different Battery. O.K.?
Replace starter.

If result (A) Starter works:
Remove positive wire from Starter. Connect original wire to starter.
Connect new positive wire to Solenoid <IN> and Battery +
Jumper Small solenoid wire to B+ to close.
A) Starter Turns motor properly
B) Starter Fails.
If (A) check positive and Negative wiring end to end and repair/replace as needed. Something is chaffed/corroded/broken.
If (B) Replace Solenoid and retest.

To test original Positive wire:
Leave new ground attached. Replace new positive with original. attempt to start.
To test original ground path:
Leave new positive on Solenoid <IN> replace new negative with original, attempt to start.

It is a simple Loop< B+ to Solenoid to Starter to Block to B-> with a Single Wire carrying the the load between each.

Now the bad news:
If the problem is Bad wiring/solenoid/ground connection/battery - You may have damaged the starter in all the attempts to make it work. Thus now there would be (2) problems.

Good luck

Re: 67 Johnson 80hp last straw!

ok i replaced everything from the starter back. i purchased a new battery wires and solenoid, and it did the trick. starter spins and engages without fail, however the engine doesnt fire up. im starting to think possibly a carb issue. by pouring fuel directly into carbs, it spits and sputters and then dies out. the carb looks like its been redone but im wondering if floats are off. compression on cylinders was left side: 105,105. right side was: 100,100. Sparks was there not sure it was the greatest but it was enough to get it running. Possible fuel issue?
