Hi Guys,

Got a 67 Johnson outboard 20HP. It runs pretty good at full throttle but it stalls when I give it the gas from idle.

It also doesn't want to idle very well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nicholas T.

I had a Sea King near the same age 25hp. It had two dials on the face of the motor which were connected to needle jets. They have seals inside. If they are worn can cause this problem. Don't know if yours has these jets or not?

i had the same problem on my '73 johnson 20, it was the "play" in the stator plate between the crankshaft and the hole in the stator plate. i shimmed it with brass shim (0.6 mm) in my case and it works fine, idles like a dream and top end good. sorry about the metric measurements but i'm in the uk.

spend 15 to 20 bucks and get a carb kit from your dealer. Replace these adjusters and then set them. Your low speed idle turn all the way in but barely seat it. back it out about 1.5 to 2 turns and start your engine. Lean it out (screw it back in) until it starts to sneeze then turn it out 1/8 turn at a time until you get the idle you desire. Your high speed setting is best done on the water. Run it wide open and adjust it until you get your best top end. I would then move it back in 1/8 to 1/4 turn to keep your rpm's down just a little bit to make sure that it gets plenty of lubrication.
