I have a 1967 Johnson 60Hp. Model #VX-13A. My problem is when I purchased the motor I didn't know anythind about a long bottom end or a short bottom end. I put the motor on a 1975 Ranger bass boat just to find out that I could run about 5MPH. on the water because the prop doesn't go far enough past the bottom of the boat. Any suggestions? What type of boat will this motor fit on?
Thanks!

Hi John.

You got hold of a short shaft engine. Just a rule of thumb here, "If the transom is over 16" high, a long shaft is needed", just a rule of thumb mind you.

Now to your problem. Back in them daze they could change lower unit depth with an extension kit. This would make the lower unit 5" lower or a long shaft. The kit would include a longer drive shaft, shift rod extension and housing extension and a couple other odds and ends. Finding one "could" be a problem but not impossible. Check around with the local dealers of Johnny/Rudes and you may get lucky. Any outboard bone yards in your area?

If that don't work, try ebay and posting on the web.

Other than not going very fast, how does the old girl run?

Hi, John.

If OBJ's suggestions don't pan out, you could mount it on an adjustable jackplate.

Good luck. :)
