I have a project engine. Mercury 500. Serial number tells me it is a 1967. The person I got it from tells me it "Ran great" the last time it was run.
I do not have the controlls for this engine. I had a engine like this last year and sold all the parts thinking I would never have another Merc 500.Is there a way to set it up to run?
Or do I have to get a set of electric controls jsut to get it started to see how it will run?
Any suggests, advise would be very helpful.

Almost any plug in cable around that era would work for you. I don't recall that they were specific to the motor. I assume this is an electric start motor and not a hand tiller. The difference being is there a plug in on the side of the engine or not. (Too many years and I can't recall if the tiller engines had a plug in on the side). I'd think if it's had electronic ignition it would have a plug in connection.

In answer to your question; you can wire around that and make it run but you'll be happier with the plug in cable. I can't imagine they aren't available somewhere dirt cheap.
