 I have an old merc 650 it seems to run OK but the cover on the left side of the power head (as viewed) from the rear has a hole corroded through it. Water squitrs out when the eninge runs. The book I have does not have good pictures. Is this a water jacket cover? The book makes it sound like it is an exhaust cover. At any rate I cleaned the hole and udnercut the edges with a dremel tool and then covered the whole area witth JB weld. It ran for acuple of hours in a barrel with no leak. Is this cover just a water jacket or is there hot exhaust gas in ther too.

The cover is for the exhaust water and if you repaired it with JB weld it should be OK the cover bolt break off quite easily if you try to remove them and you could never weld it if it'e corroded thru

Yep, covered by Bob...also, the new JB WaterWeld tube .....its kneadable putty ..sticks anywhere..I've wrapped it around broken tiller/motor mount....lay down supports..like a rock now ...

Thanks guys. THe JB weldf repair seems to work. It has held many hours now without sign of a leak.
I have other issues with the motor but this part seems OK
