Hi Zman,
I am going to guess that it's the water tube stuck in the rubber grommet on top of the water pump housing. With age the rubber in the grommet will sometimes weld itself to the copper tube. Some GENTLE prying with a flat blade screwdriver, twisting the unit, or tapping with a block of wood may loosen it up. If you have any gap at all or can shoot in from the shifter access, you can spray some WD-40 or CRC in there to try to loosen it up. Very rarely do the driveshafts get stuck on these motors, as OMC was one of the first to use stainless shafts.
- Scott

Hi z-man
There is a roll pin threw the top of the drive shaft. Try rotating drive shaft to line-up roll pin with slot in exhaust housing. As chinewalker said it could be the gromet stuck. If that dosen't work, remove power head from top. I find it quite common to have stuck shaft. So be carefull, take yout time.

Just where is this roll pin & why is it not mentioned or shown in the shop manual(s)? I have not seen this pin mentioned in any of the other 'stuck driveshaft' posts.

Thanks

I have a 6hp 1966 Evenrude, which should be identical to yours. It has been a year or so since I had the lower unit off but as I remember it, you have to really pull on it.

You don't have to remove the roll pin (this is the impellor drive pin) at this time.

At this point, you have two options. You can pull on it and work the drive shaft out of the Powerhead, where it goes inside a splinned hole. or you can remove the gears and drive the driveshaft out of the pinion gear, bushing, seals etc. Dried grease is what holes the drive shaft in the gearbox, and corrosion is what holds it in the powerhead.
