I've worked on various types of motors most of my life so I can usually figure things out but I always ask if I don't know how to go about doing something. I just put a rebuilt starter and new solenoid back on the motor and replaced the ignition switch. The previous owner lost the key and when he replaced the switch he crossed up the wires and burned up the starter. After some initial issues this afternoon I discovered that the hot wire froom the battery to the switch was dead. I replaced it and connected a volt meter to the starter side of the solenoid (without the starter hooked up) and I got a good solid click from the solenoid and got a good reading on the meter. The starter and solenoid weren't on the motor when I got it and I still have a wire with a large eye coming out of the wiring harness close to the solenoid and another coming from the amplifier. I don't see any other wires for the connection between the solenoid and starter and with the cost of parts for these older motors I don't want to screw it up. Thanks for any info. Oh yeah, my dog is mad at me because he loves to ride in the boat and I traded my old boat for this one. He really likes this bow rider because of all the room in it but sitting in it while I work on it just isn't enough for him. Have a great day on the water everyone. Thanks

Re: 68 85 hp V4 engine wiring

I figured out the wiring, what a nightmare! The hot wire for the ignition switch started out green and ended up red at the solenoid! Turns out though that the "rebuilt" starter is junk. I tried it on the motor, took it off and bench tested it, took it apart and cleaned the brushes etc., nothing!! Now I have to get back to the guy that sold it to me, he had it in a box from his mechanic, the same one that wired the boat and I don't think the guy that sold me the post and motor knew it was bad. Oh well, such is life. Hope you all have a great day on the water.
