68 johnson 100 hp torque

my 68 100hp has the exhaust snout where most modern outboards have a fin to counteract the torque of the prop. When I let go of the wheel the boat turns sharply. Anyone know of a low cost solution to this problem? A hydrofoil? I head there might be something cheap to attach to the skeg.

Check to see if you are running the engine with the tilt pin in the proper hole. Propeller thrust should be parallel to the surface of the water, or 3-5 degrees out from being parallel to the bottem of the boat. Other than that check to see if the skeg is straight and not twisted or bent.

You may want to check if you have a friction adjustment on your helm that you can tighten up to prevent the free wheelin' if you can't adjust the motor position.

There is a friction adjustment on the engine. It is located at the front, below the lower engine cowl just above the transom clamp

Is this snout a part of the gearcase? Or is it bolted on ?If bolted on turn it in the direction the boat pulls.<br /><br />Oh,if you have tiller cable pulley steering, ... <br /><br />Bless your soul<br /><br /><br />DHP

yeabs....I believe your water intake/exhaust snout is made so you can move it from side to side. Losen the screws and move the backside of it toward the starboard side (right) as you look at the back of the engine. May not take all the torque out but should help.

Thanks OBJ, I will look at that. I do see that it has screws, but it appears to be in a track (fitting in a recessed area) and I assumed it would not adjust. I will take it off and try it.
