Hi All

Got this motor, model number RKL 30 O Does not have tach. Was tach an option? If so, and I now want one, is there a lead that I should connect to? In other words, how would you go about adding a tach to this motor?

thank you
Billy Bob

Re: 68 Johnson 40 horse tach question

Today I will be installing a dash tach to my 73 Evinrude 65HP. Keep in mind that I am learning also. I have the schematic and it shows a gray wire that is marked tach. I have located it in the control box with the end capped and loose. The shop manual that I have shows most models of Evinrude have a tach wire in the harness. Most tachs I found for outboards required an alternator. Mine has none and I settled on a Rule Aquameter, digital from B-us that is universal and can be connected to any outboard. It can be set at several settings to match the amount of pulses your outboard sends. Here it says consult the manufacturer...I posted the question here and got one answer. I will try that setting and if it doesnt work I will try to wing it and use the general instructions that state a setting for the amount of cylinders you have. I will repost later and let you know my results.

Hi Cap'n Bob

That sounds like a winner. I hope you have success on your end too.

You have Captain status, you can't really be that much of a newbie. Or am I misunderstanding what First Mate, Captain, and Admiral are all about?

thank you
Billy Bob

1973 65HP has a charging system, look for rectifier on engine find gray wire. Try # 6 on the tach.

Not so on the RKL30 1968 model did not have alt charging system.
