'68 Johnson 6hp impeller R&R

My manual is a few hundred miles away at the moment and I desperately need to replace the impeller tonight.

I removed the 4 bolts (item 55) holding the upper gearcase to the exhaust housing but I’m unable to split the case more than .25. There is definitely something (shift rod?) holding the two haves together. Do I need to split the lower gearcase (item 19) to disconnect something??

I promised to teach my boys to fish this weekend and I don't want to disappoint them.

look under the carb you will see 1 bolt # 60 holding the shift rod remove the l/u the shift rod will come out with the unit

Put ther engine in reverse which will let you frop the unit slightly farther. Look then in the resulting gap for the brass shift connector. Remove one of the 3/8" hex bolts to release that shift rod.

If the unit still doesn't want to drop, turn the driveshaft so that the upper pin aligns with a related slot to release the driveshaft.

I believe that you will find that # 60 is one of two screws hiding between the mid section and lower unit. You should have just enough space to remove the lower screw in the opening that you have already created.

The screw must be completely removed. If you do not have enough room, move the shift lever.

Thanks for the quick response.

I thought #60 secured the lower shift rod to the upper shift rod.

Here's a schematic that shows the upper shift rod (#65)

So, should I disconnect #65 from #24 ? (2nd schematic)

I thought so too, but I couldn’t see the rod when I separated the two. Shifting gears did help but not enough to get a tool in between.

I wonder if #31 (in the first schematic) is an access cover to get to screw #60?

Precisely, it does. And if you don't disconnect it, you can't get the gearcase off.

Okay, before we get ahead of ourselves - are we sure the motor is a 1968? If it is an earlier model, the disconnect may be up under the powerhead and would require removal of the powerhead.

If it is indeed a 1968, then the coupling will appear at the split when you drop the gearcase as Joe Reeves pointed out...

Those are the only two ways those units ever came off...

OK, so we are in definitely in agreement on that issue.

The problem I have is disconnecting it.

I can't get to screw #60 when the case is split and the upper connection (#24/25 on schematic 2) is underneath the power head.

Thanks Scott, The model number is CD-25C.

Off hand, do you know how much clearance I should get when I seperate the two cases?

Could it be that the driveshaft is stuck in the powerhead?If so, how much can I pry the case halves apart before I risk damaging the shift mechinism?

Push the shift lever hard to forward while rotating the prop clockwise. This will pull the shift rod up out of the gearcase as far as possible. Now, with the bolts removed and with no restriction on the gearcase, push the shift lever to reverse. That should give you more than enough room.

If you pry the gearcase and the driveshaft is stuck, you will pull the driveshaft through the water pump assembly and destroy it. The drive shaft will still be stuck and you will have accomplished nothing.

You still have to disconnect the shift rod.
