68 Johnson 9.5 Impeller / Thermostat?

I have a 68 Johnson 9.5 that I recently sent off for an impeller because i couldn't get the l/u separated. Apparently it took about six hours of heat and wd40 for the mechanic to get it off. The first impeller separated from the brass before the motor was returned to me. I supplied a second impeller and the motor was reassembled and returned. I ran the motor tonight in a barrel and didn't get the usual spurting of water from the exhaust relief. Instead I'm getting a very constant stream of exhaust and some steam mixed in. I haven't had a chance to take it apart yet to see if the impeller is shot again.

Does this motor have a thermostat or something similar? It's about 35 degrees outside right now, so i don't know if that is causing my "steam" issue or if there's something else wrong. The motor was pumping water before it was returned to me. I have the original service manual but it hasn't been returned to me yet - i sent it off with the mechanic.

I do see on the parts blowup that there is a thermostat. Are they prone to going bad?

Is it safe to run this motor without the tstat to test the impeller?

Sure it wouldn't hurt but I wouldn't leave it that way. If your going to have the tstat removed, you should also consider dropping the leg and connecting a hose directly to the water tube and giving it a good flushing out. This really only flushes it well with the tstat removed. Don't run the motor during the flush though. Rick.

Well tonight it's pumping water. Oh - and there wasn't a thermostat in there when i removed the triangular access. This thing is for the birds.

Hey Jeff... that's a great motor, loved by many. All things mechanical can be frustrating at times but you will have lots of help from the members of the forum to get you back up and running. If it didn't pump one night and did the next and you haven't really done anything to it that is strange. Just wondering, but the second night did you have the leg further into the water than the first. Even a few inches can make a difference. I have a 9.5 and haven't ever had the time to figure out how to get it running. Maybe this winter will be the one. They do look sort of funny to me. Don't give up and keep us posted. Rick.

I was definitely paying more attention to the water level in the barrel. I think the exhaust output was creating a void and the pump was sucking exhaust. That would explain the copious amounts of steam and exhaust coming from the exhaust relief initially. When i paid more attention to the water level in the barrel and kept filling it - it pumped water. Still going to tear it apart and inspect everything.
