Re: 68 starcraft explorer restore

Yea i'm going to add more support. I think i'm going to flip it and paint it. then when I reflip it I will add the extra support. My son

finished getting the pinstripes off today by himself when he got home from school. I work afternoon shift so I don't have alot of time

to work with him. Tonight I made some small sawhorses for when I flip the boat. They will screw to the craddle and keep the boat at a

good level to sand and paint, I hope. Putting my order in thursday for all my glassing supplies(i hope all).

What size fiber strands should I use to bead in the stringers?

The sheet foam, if installed properly will offer great support for your deck as well. With the added benefit of NEVER absorbing water. NEVER. Can't say that about the Pourable stuff. Easy to cut and shape so you will have a minimal of voids, especially on your boats layout.

Your boat...Your choices.;)

I'd never put sheet foam in a fiberglass boat, and I consider it only mediocre for aluminum boats.

Expanding foam will never absoeb water if you take care of your boat and keep it covered to protect all of the hard work you've done to it after your restoration.

From the foam FAQ section at the USComposites sites:

14. Is this foam water resistant?

Yes, but with the following caveat. The foams that we sell are considered closed-cell, which means that each cell that makes up the foam structure is completely closed off from surrounding cells which prevents it from acting like a sponge. It is completely safe for this foam to be in contact with water for hours/days/weeks and even months with no adverse effects. However, it should never be submerged in contact with water permanently. Over a period of years the water contact can begin to soften the foam and cause it to lose its closed-cell status. This foam is designed primarily to be used as an insurance policy in case of damage/holes that could cause a vessel to lose buoyancy. Pinhole sized openings would essentially have no effect on the foam since the amount of exposure is so minimal but you should always make repairs as soon as possible to keep the foam effectiveness as good as possible. This will be the case with all after market closed-cell polyurethane foams and even manufacturer installed foams.

A lot of people don't understan this about expanding urethane foam.

Looks like we are working on similar projects, I'm working on a 65 Explorer. I see you cut a hole in the front platform, is there anything interesting underneath? I assume it is just hollow space, but I don't know as that is the only area that I haven't really touched on mine. Also, did you add the cap to your boat or did it come with it? I know mine does not have a cap and in the one or two pictures I've seen from the 65 Starcraft ads they don't seem to have one. I haven't seen any old pictures of the 68s though.

Nothing spacial under front platform. It was soft so it was very easy it remove. I think it must have been a compartment at some time.

The cap is original. I should be flipping it this weekend so I can start preping it for paint. Have you started a thread yet? I plan on

extending the platform back 3-4 foot and raising it 4-6 inches.

Is the bondo jelly OK to fill old snap holes above waterline. I'm ready to flip the boat but must wait till sun when I can get some help. Thought I would start filling holes and start the prep work on the sides of the Hull. Which primer from tsc should I use?

Bondo isn't usually acceptable for marine applications, a polyester based filler like peanut butter or an epoxy type filler are better suited for boats.

How many holes do you have to fill, a gazillion?

Welll sanding is going about as good as to be expected. I should have around 3 more nights left. I have given up the idea of using this boat the end of March. I would have to start rushing thing and I am putting to much work and money in it not to do the best I can on it.

I remember this part!!! Just remember only YOU will no where the imperfections are. Fish won't care. I spend a LOT of time making Mine perfect and smooth as a baby's behind. First day out the trailer loading went bad and the imperfections were ALL back Plus some. My advice, make sure the major stuff is taken care of and finish it. When you're on the water you'll forget all about those little imperfections.
