I would think that the choice of sealer is less critical than where you use it.
There are way better options now than in the 60s, and more of them.

I actually spoke this morning to the only remaining shop in our city who will still service old motors. The older fellow who runs it has been at it for many years. He has a small salvage yard, too, where I found several things I was still needing. He said that they ALWAYS use a little silicone in the bores when installing new bearings and seals. He also said that he NEVER uses the OEM sealant or adhesive products but instead opts for basic off-the-shelf automotive silicones/RTVs.
