So, it's running, I have the prop off and its in a barrel of water so I can run it. The water, however, has a lot of oil on top. The mixture may be a little heavier than 50:1, but when I take it our of the barrel it seems to drip a bit of oil. Where should I start to look?

fyi - This engine sat for years. I just changed oil in the lower unit and it was pretty milky.

Re: 69 Evinrudce Lightwin - 4hp

Most water intrusion to the gear case is caused by not replacing the little nylon washers on the vent and drain/fill plugs. It is completely normal and acceptable to get a bit of black oil out of the leg after the motor runs. This is not gear case oil, it is unburned fuel mix oil that is inside the exhaust housing. When running in a barrel you will get a concentration of oil on the top of the water due to the small amount of available water. Once on the lake you will not see it. Sounds like all is well. If your worried you might have water in the lower unit let it sit vertical for a day or two and then loosen the drain. If water is present it will be the first liquid to come out the drain. Best of luck. Rick.

As stated above...

The test tanks do get loaded up with grease - nature of the beast.

Do you have your idle mixture set - too rich and the tank will get uglier quicker.

Must be a little too rich, I also have a '72 Ted Williams 7hp and it doesn't leave near the amount of oil in the barrel as my Evinrude does. I'll dilute my mixture a bit with straight gasoline and see if that helps. Thanks again.

The question gets asked here almost every day. The answer is still the same...it is normal. It is the oil that you put in the gas.

50/1 is the correct mix. I would not lessen that as you will cause yourself (motor) a world of hurt by doing so. It is all about the fact your running in a barrel and the oil gets concentrated. It won't be noticeable on the water. Rick.
