Re: 69 Evinrude 115,tilt?
Back then they were nothing more than a shock absorber, (P/N 0383617), replaced as a unit other than the end bushings themselves.
They show up on ebay from time to time used.
Most of the ones I've see that weren't badly corroded still worked. They don't ad any lift assist at all, they just keep the motor from being dropped down on the latch hard. They do help prevent the motor from kicking up in the event that it hits something and isn't latched down.
Those shocks new listed for well over $200 each and I don't think they are still available. They were the same on all V4's from 1969 to 1972.
I had one motor that had a bad set, they were seized and preventing the motor from going down all they way, I ended up cutting them out and using an aftermarket power tilt and trim unit from CMC. I simply mounted the motor to the tilt unit with the latch engaged down and used the power tilt from then on.
