I recently replaced the points and condencers andthe coil on my 69 evinrude. I turned the shaft to the arrow that shows it is at the top of the stroke and tet the points at .020. when you turn the shaft the points open to about .035. does that mean the piece that goes arround the shaft is worn? do I just set the point at .020 when they are the farthest apart or do I need to replace that piece that slides down the shaft??

(sorry I am new at this and dont know what all the parts are called)

The piece that slides down on the shaft is called a breaker cam. You set the points so they are open .020 at their widest opening. Excessive wear of the cam would be extremely rare.

I agree, turn the crank till the points are at there widest and then set the points. I just learned how to do this last year, but the guys on here were great and I had it running beautifully in no time. I have a manual if you need more help.

Easier than that.....rotate crankshaft until the crankshaft keyway is aligned with the rub block of the pointset. Adjust pointset adj. screw until desired gap is reached .020. Tighten down pointset mounting screw. Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees and adj. other pointset the same way.
