69' evinrude skipping at low idle

I just purchased this 25hp. I seems to run fine in the barrel when the throttle
is up a bit. When I ease it back it won't cut out but it starts to skip.

Any thoughts on a fix would be great.Thanks....

Do you have the cowl on or off? When were the carbs last rebuilt? If you prime the bulb does it pick up?

check you spark, they will run on one cylinder, they only have one carb, so it would effect both cylinders.

Thanks for the replies. The cowl was off. The carbs, probably never rebuilt.
I don't really know the history of this motor. Cosmetically is beautiful.
Is a carb rebuild very compicated? I have the shop manual. It seems to
be pretty specific on step by step procedures. The manual is for this motor only.
I'm pretty handy but have never rebuilt a carb so I think it's doable with
a little helps from my friends.

it is as simple as a lawn mower carb, but check the spark first, could be dropping a coil.

I'm in Mass. heading for sunny Fl. today. I'm going to check for spark
before I hop the plane. IF I have spark in both should I rebuild the carb?
Is that the most logical?

It is starting to get colder here. I don't know how long I'll be able to work
on this outside. I"ll have to drag the hose in and out to keep it from
freezing I guess. I'd like to get it purring for spring shad fishing

I dont think you can run that motor in a bucket with the cowl off.

I'm a novice so could you explain cowl ON cowl OFF diference?

in a bucket the exhaust comes up around the motor, the carb sucks the air, the motor does not like to breath its own exhaust, just like us. not enough oxygen. also get the leg atleast 1/2 way submerged so the water pump will pickup water, or you will burn up impeller.

I'll try to get her in a lake around here. I put in a new water pump kit sunday.

Pumps like a champ. I did notice the smoke all around the motor while it was

running. It actually forced me to backaway. The motor probably felt the same way. It couldn't breathe.

Again thanks ,I'm learning with every post. I just know I've found a gem here

and want to get the most out of her. Performance and dependability.

No I haven't. It started right up after 2 years of storeage so I didn't think

they were an issue right now. Wrong?
